It's in effect until midnight Sunday, Aug. 13.
The main threat is for damaging wind gusts and large hail, the National Weather Service said, adding that isolated tornadoes are possible, mainly north and west of New York City.
In addition, storms will be capable of locally heavy rainfall which could lead to some urban, low lying and poor drainage flooding with isolated to scattered flash flooding possible.
In New York, the watch covers all of New York City as well as these counties:
- Westchester
- Nassau
- Suffolk
- Putnam
- Dutchess
- Rockland
- Orange
- Ulster
- Columbia
- Greene
In Connecticut, two counties are covered by the watch:
- Fairfield
- Litchfield
